The People's Food Co-op is a consumer cooperative; this means we are owned by our customers. Our owners fill a nine-seat board of directors from among their ranks.

Board Meetings

The Board currently meets from 7-9 pm on the 4th Tuesday of the month. Our meetings are open to the public and all owners and community members are encouraged to attend. Our next meeting is Tuesday, May 28, at the office of theGreat Lakes Peace Jam (625 Harrison St, Suite 2).  You can download the next meeting's agenda soon.  We'd love to see you at a board meeting!

March Board Meeting Summary

We covered a lot of ground at this month's meeting!

The Board discussed what would be the best way to link the PFC's policies to our website, so the public can have access to our most up-to-date policies.  We monitored PFC policies M Global and M1-4.  The Board recently took an evaluation of ourselves and we looked at areas we scored low on.  We will also compare the data we retrieved to the last Board self-assessment survey taken two years ago to see where we have grown.

We also discussed the progress of moving into the managerial position of the Kalamazoo Farmers' Market and possible partnerships for implementing improvements.  The Read and Seed program is coming along, with more information to be announced at the Annual Owner Meeting.  The Annual Owner Meeting is on April 12th, and we are looking for volunteers for before, during, and after the event!

The role of the Board is to establish a vision for the future of the Co-op and govern the cooperative towards these ends. At People's, our Board governs via our By-Laws and our Policies. In addition to governance, the Board provides fiduciary and management oversight.

In addition, our Ends Policy is used to guide the organization in every decisions that we make - from what to carry on the shelves to how to best engage our community.

The general manager regularly reports on PFC's progress toward achieving our Ends. See the most recent Ends report here.

October 2010 Board Meeting

The board of directors had an action-packed month.  The expansion that we have been visioning and working toward for years will soon be underway.  At the October board meeting, we carefully reviewed and approved resolutions that allow Chris Dilley to sign (on behalf of all PFC owners) the myriad of official documents that need to be signed before we break ground at the new site.  Excitement is in the air!  In thinking about our new PFC home, the board and management team joined forces and participated in a retreat focused on making the PFC more welcoming and diverse.  Facilitated by Sarah Drumm, the retreat involved team building, conversations about our personal experiences, and action planning that led to concrete ideas and plans to implement.
